What do I wear to a Family Photo Session? | Edmonton and Sherwood Park Photographer
"HELP! What should we wear to a family photo session?" Is probably the most commonly asked question I get as a photographer. I typically tell them all the same piece of advice. Be comfortable but not jammies. Relaxed but not sweats and just make sure your outfits compliment or "go" together. There is no set rule as to what works best or what looks best. It's all personal preference but I definitely shy away from everyone wearing jeans and a matching top. It's not giving anyone the opportunity to show their personality when it looks like they are in a uniform of sorts. I am going to give you a round up of my favourite family outfit images as well as a few Pinterest ones.
1. My number one thing that I tell every family is try to stick to a color palette. Three to five colours MAX.
2. Layers are awesome. Think scarves, sweaters, collars, cardigans, vests. They can really show personality especially in your little ones!
3. Patterns. Think stripes, polka dots. plaid (my fave) and some floral ( but not a large floral pattern) Avoid large logos that distract the eye. It also tends to date the image over the years.
4. SHOES. Oh good lord shoes. This one is by far the most important. Think not too dressy or too athletic. Leather sandals, simple flip flops, converse sneaks, boat shoes, loafers all work great for the dad's and boys. Stay away from crocs and rubbery shoes as they tend to be really bright and distracting. For the women, well I'm actually never too worried about them!
Think timelessness. When I was doing hair back in the day, I always told the bride to think timeless because she would not want to look back at a fad hair do and wonder what the heck she was thinking. Same goes for photography sessions. If you have a great sense of style that is of the now, awesome rock it. But if you are buying something to wear just to look modern and cool for this one session, then it's not going to work. Remember TIMELESSNESS.
Here's a couple examples of past families who got it right.

Oh! and kids. They all have their own little personalities and quirks. They have their super hero capes and their unicorn headbands. They can totally wear them! But lets save it to the end. I really make a huge effort to have FUN at the end of the session. I let the kids have their own ideas for photos that they want to capture so that's the perfect time to add those kiddo quirks. Those are the moments that everyone wants to look back and remember. I know I do. ❤️
